In 1938, nearing the end of a daunting depression, day time radio kept the American public on edge with ominous events surrounding the Munich crisis, threatening another world war. With the need for deep comfort and inner peace, evening shows offered a well deserved reprieve with soothing hour long programs aired FREE of commercial or news interruptions.

On Sunday, October 30th, 1938 the Columbia Broadcasting System, (CBS) aired their regular one hour evening program with alarming NEWS bulletins, misleading many listeners into fits of hysteria.

The first interruption of their evening program reported an odd explosion seen on Mars, then an unusual object falling on a farm in New Jersey, followed by a ‘live report’ from the farm with police officials and a crowd of onlookers surrounding a strange cylindrical object. Everything escalates as Martians were ‘reported’ emerging from the cylindrical craft, using heat-ray guns which panicked reporters and bled the audio feed, distorting it into crackles and pops, culminating in an abrupt halt to the reporters presentation…leaving listeners horrified on the edge of their seats.

Each following interruption became increasingly alarming, detailing an alien invasion taking place around the world with futile efforts from the US military to protect humans or have any effect whatsoever on the invading species. A captivated and quivering audience stood by as another report from a Manhattan rooftop described giant Martian war machines releasing clouds of poisonous gas across New York City, with desperate citizens scrambling for their lives, as the news caster coughed gruffly.

This caused great trepidation from the east to the west coast as many listeners believed the events reported in these very official sounding NEWS bulletins were factual events, substantiated with references to Legitimate Locations and Authorized Public Representatives of that Current Time.

In the midst of the broadcast the studio received an official order from authorities to reiterate to the audience this was a drama, but orders were not followed. As they say … the show must go on. Programmers did not want their drama interrupted.

By the end of the program mobs of terrified citizens had formed in the streets, and officials in black uniforms filled the broadcasting studio, detaining a few actors in a small back office while network employees hurriedly collected, destroyed and locked away all scripts and records of the broadcast before the press let loose upon them.

Furious reporters implied they knew of suicides, people fleeing their homes, thousands of deaths via stampedes and traffic fatalities, wanting more information from the studio.

Coincidentally, phone lines and electricity suffered a short circuit at the Superior Portland Cement Company’s substation, halting all communication for many residents, who at their time of greatest need were unable to reach neighbors, family or friends to calm their fears.

Keep in mind this drama, which they titled, The War of the Worlds, came at a time of intense anxiety, hopelessness, and stress for the nation, when people were already feeling incredibly shell shocked, worn down and fragile.

The broadcast was originally scheduled to air on September 11th, (911), but was changed to the night before Halloween. Adolf Hitler made a public reference to the broadcast using the effect it had on the public as a means to condemn democracy.

On November 2, 1938, the Australian newspaper The Age characterized the incident as “mass hysteria” and stated that “never in the history of the United States had such a wave of terror and panic swept the continent”.

KTSA radio characterized the panic generated by The War of the Worlds broadcast by saying: ”The country at large was frightened almost out of its wits”.

CBS found the instigated madness via Orson Welles presentation of his War of the Worlds broadcast extremely useful in promoting the strength of its influence.

Some critics claim this was a planned experiment to gauge how the public would respond to fabricated emotionally driven information. “CBS ran subsequent celebrations of this program, such as ‘The Night America Trembled,’ and included it prominently in its 2003 celebrations of CBS’s 75th anniversary as a television broadcaster.” ~ Wiki

The FCC chose not to chastise Welles or CBS, and also “barred complaints about The War of the Worlds from being brought up during license renewals. To further insult…
