The most sought after, cherished and successful doctor in the mid 1700‘s was a Swiss man named Michael Schuppach. At that point in history most doctors used a technique called blood-letting as their sole method of healing. Patients would be cut, praying that the elimination of blood would eliminate the malady. Cutting off body parts for almost any problem with the extremities was common, even though anesthesia had not been invented, and death was rampant after most surgeries due to infection.

In place of antibiotics, which were yet to be invented, nasty tasting vile’s of unknown “medicine” with unpronounceable Latin names were given to patients, even though they held little hope to result in a cure…and perhaps only given as an experiment or to speed up death.

Then along comes Dr. Michael Schuppach, a friendly man who lived in the small alpine village of Langnau. To visit the good doctor, patients from all over the world would make the long trek on foot through the natural beauty of the countryside to his small office in the hills. By the time they reached him, patients would have been party to days of a good physical workout, witnessed profound beauty, magnificent fresh air, and enjoyed delightful scenes of nature amid wild birds singing love songs along the way.

Dr. Schuppach offered herbal tinctures in colorful bottles with names such as, “The Oil Of Joy,” and “Little Flowers Heart.” They were all sweet and pleasing to the senses. His consultations involved a discussion about how the patient may “bring their Spirit back in harmony with nature.” He also considered everything in nature worthy of worship. As he walked in reverence with the land, people felt his love in everything he glanced at or touched.

Schuppach developed many forms of treatments and techniques which mostly involved listening to his patients problems, then finding playful ways to make them believe the problem had been solved, while getting them excited about what they loved most in life.  His goal was to entertain and inspire until they felt well. Unlike most other doctors of his time, and many today, he never scoffed at anyone’s explanation for pain. Instead, he listened patiently and compassionately.

One patient claimed he had swallowed a hay wagon and it’s driver, and Schuppach told him, “Yes, I believe I can hear the sound of his whip inside your belly.”  Schuppach gave him a mild herbal sedative and purgative. While the patient slept, Schuppach  arranged for a wagon and a driver with a whip to drive by his office on his cue. When the man woke up, he vomited, and Schuppach gave the driver his cue. With the crack of the whip, and the vision of the wagon speeding by, the patient  indeed believed that he had expelled the wagon along with the rest of his stomach contents, and felt totally cured.

Many patients were taken to the symphony or the ballet, or for a walk in the mountains; anything to illicit joy, freedom from worries, inspiration, an interest in life, creativity and potential again. The resulting improvement in the patients outlook had lasting and profound psychological effects, and at least 80 people were lined up at his door each day to receive more of their Spirit. Even Johann Wolfgang von Geothe is said to have visited the good doctor Schuppach.

Dr. Schuppach recognized the importance of the Spirit in all physical healings. The SPIRIT is what heals the body. If you can bring your spirit back inside your body, by following your highest excitement, finding what thrills you to be alive, your body will heal.

When your spirit and your consciousness have a burning desire to empower your body to express creativity, more life force will flow to you. You can perform miracles with that life force.

Have you ever had a burst of energy when you fall in love, or get excited about an adventure or a project? This is your Spirit moving back inside your body. Fragments of it leave when the body is in pain, when you are frightened, angry or sad etc.

When the Spirit comes back into the body through happy excitement, energy and vitality bubble over again like a small child running through a field of wild flowers, or jumping into piles of hay on autumn afternoons. Life becomes fun again and this entices the Spirit further within the body.

Making a good home for your spirit by doing those things your Spirit would enjoy, (which can begin through imagination) is the most important step in long life, vitality and true deep long lasting healing.

If things feel impossible for you right now, consider Wilma Rudolph, a world record- holding Olympic Champion and international Sports icon who won three gold medals in the 1960 Summer Olympics; acclaimed the fastest woman in the world at that time. She was the first American woman to win three gold metals in a single Olympic Games.

More significantly, Wilma reached this peak after being born prematurely, weighing only 4.5 pounds, the 20th of 22 siblings. In childhood she suffered numerous illnesses, such as pneumonia, scarlet fever, and polio, resulting in infantile paralysis at the age of five. She recovered from these illnesses, but lost the strength in her left leg and foot, requiring the use of a brace, and crutches to walk.

Without much support, Wilma managed to overcome this debilitating state and walk on her own by the age of twelve. Perhaps it was the powerful desire her Spirit held to run like the wind with full use of her legs that helped her reach such heights.
