Captain’s Log

______________

____________

____________

Captain Kirk:

Our species can only survive if we have obstacles to overcome Spock. You remove those obstacles and without them… we weaken and die. How have humans on this alternate Earth remained alive?

Spock:

Captain, this is illogical. Change is the essential process of existence, yet this planet evades this very principle.

Kirk:

What the devil, Spock. Meet me in transport. We’re beaming down.

____________

_____________

Spock:

In critical moments, this species has the ability to see just what they want to see Captain. They appear to exclude all that is painful, yet true. This is at the root of their inability to evolve.

Kirk:

The greatest danger Spock… irrational fear of the unknown. But there’s no such thing as the unknown, only temporarily hidden, temporarily misunderstood.

Spock:

Agreed Captain. Insufficient facts always invite danger.

Kirk:

Only evil seeks to maintain power by suppressing the truth. Find what we can offer here Spock, if anything.

____________

____________

Spock:

I have examined the situation from all angles Captain, and it’s plainly hopeless. Logic informed me that under these circumstances, the only possible action would be to beam up, and allow this species non-evolution.

Kirk:

Dammit Spock, I don’t believe in no win scenarios! Worlds may change, galaxies disintegrate, but leaving this planet without taking risks for the children is beyond my scope of reasoning.

Spock:

Captain, you miss the obvious. It’s unfortunate to observe their utter lack in ability to accept facts, no matter the proof submitted. I find their incessent procrastination to be most illogical. It is curious how often these humans manage to obtain that which they do not want.

The fact that my internal arrangement differs from this version of your species, Jim, pleases me to no end.

____________

_____________

Kirk:

Spock, I need a run down of the core structure of their network and how to transfer power away from those who perpetuate this prison system.

Spock:

Captain, When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. If all things are assumed possible, the network funneling lunch money, hiding extortion of these children, must be exchanged for a system which roots out all criminal behavior, enabling only benevolent transactions within the system, therefore, removing the possibility of receiving or transmitting funds which perpetuate the stagnancy of this species.

Kirk:

We won’t avoid a little ugliness from this transition Spock, from within and from without. What will replace this network?

Spock:

Where there is no emotion, Captain, there is no motivation for violence. For the time being, I suggest we replace this network with a subsituary system removed completely from current network contributors.

Re-route the tachyon flow through the warp drive polarity inducer to mirror our system overlaid with theirs, bypassing legacy access, overtaking or superseeding their corrupt network.

Kirk:

So be it Spock, get to work.

____________

_____________

Kirk to Spock :

Sometimes a feeling is all we humans have to go on Spock, illogical as it may be. I have no idea what I’m supposed to do here, I only know what I can do…my best.

____________

____________

Kirk:

Spock, we now face the most difficult task of convincing those intent on destorying themselves to use logic.

Spock:

Captain, Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end of problems. We will do what we have always done Jim, we will find hope in the impossible. A stallion must first be brocken before it reaches its potential.

Kirk:

What are you suggesting Spock. The real burden will come to the parents and students in these elementary school systems.

Spock:

It is only through experience that they will know and rise up to make necessary changes.

Kirk:

Do you have no compassion Spock ?

Spock:

Although I am not capable of emotion, this is not a punishment. It must be up to them to pursuade those they have given power to, with what the people truly want.

Without followers evil cannot spread

Kirk:

Will this new system be incorruptible?

Spock:

Computers make excellent and efficient servants but I have no wish to serve under them. This is the first solution to a bigger problem. It is only with their cooperation that it can be corrupted again, or used against them.

Recall the planetary disaster in the sigma quadrant Jim. We can do no more than set markers for them to take up or dismiss.

Kirk:

It is possible to commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness, that is life. All we can do is advise them of a better future.
